Day 7 - Crazy Hats

Today Christian did the most kickass recipe with the old, leftover bread. It's a German dish, called Scheiterhaufen and it's essentially old bread with sugar and butter and eggs, put into the oven together with some sour cherries. And the result is amazing. It's like a sort of bread cake. Sweet, with lots of fat, the bread soft again because it soaked up the butter, egg and juice from the cherries, and a slightly caramelized sugar cinnamon crust on the top. I wish I had taken a picture but I somehow forgot. Also it was the last glas of cherries and the last bits of hard bread, so there is no more Scheiterhaufen to make unfortunately. But I'll remember the recipe.

The other funny thing we did was to build little bottle hats for ourselves. We thought about putting a flower in the top bit to look even more ridiculous but we had a good laugh as it is already. Just the most random stuff you do when you're bored out at sea.

Other than those the day was relatively un-eventful. We rebuilt the sails again, this time to the main sail, foresail combination. At some point this becomes necessary if the wind is turning too far to the South.

We need the wind from behind for the butterfly double foresail setup, and we don't want to adjust our course to go too far South so at some point when the wind is blowing that way we need to change sails. And today was that day. Putting up the main sail is always a bit of an adventure. It doesn't roll out as nicely as the foresails and is on the big beam, which once the foresail is out, can swing around and literally kill you when it does so. So with this setup you have to be more careful when walking around on deck.

For dinner we had Squash Noodles. A favorite recipe of mine. It's a noodle sauce with some white wine, cheese, ham, rosemary and onions, all dissolved together with the squash to form a nice creamy pasta sauce.

I only have a picture from the leftovers the day after but it's a beautiful meal and we all enjoyed it tremendously.
